PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS
Maple
Leaf Brand glaze can be used as protective coatings for products
in this industry. Pharmaceutical pills, tablets and slow release
capsules are coated with one to twenty coats of dewaxed shellac
to protect against moisture; to control disintegration in the body;
and as a finishing film upon which a trademark imprint can be made.
The optical industry also has use for shellac.
PHARMACEUTICAL GLAZE - Technical Information
Maple Leaf Brand Pharmaceutical Glazes are alcohol solutions of
various types of Food Grade Shellac. These are available in various
concentrations of "LB Cuts" which refers to the pound of the Lac
Resin dissolved in one gallon of alcohol to make a particular cut
of glaze.
These glazes are used extensively in the Drug Industry as a natural
sealer which improves the general appearance of the product, extends
shelf life, provides good moisture protection, and a solid base
for pre print coatings.
Maple Leaf Pharmaceutical Glazes are available in two different
forms.
1 Food Grade Refined (Dewaxed) Pharmaceutical Glaze
This Glaze is made from a wax free shellac. Since it is Dewaxed,
the viscosity is lower allowing for an initial higher solids application.
This clear Refined Glaze will provide quick transparent uniform
drying with superior colour retention. Products coated with this
glaze will have a clear brilliant finish and excellent clarity.
2 Food Grade Regular Pharmaceutical Glaze
This grade of glaze is produced from a shellac which contains approximately
5% of the naturally occurring lac wax. The addition of the wax to
this product increases the viscosity of the glaze which allows for
a quicker build up on porous applications. This product however
does not provide the sharp finish that the Dewaxed grade offers
and the superior water resistance is some what reduced.
